Quick Verdict

Coda AI is not just Notion with an AI chat — it’s a fundamentally different approach to what a document can be. Coda treats documents as lightweight applications, and AI is woven into that fabric. You don’t ask Coda AI a question in a sidebar; you ask it to fill a column, generate a workflow, or write a formula that automates your team’s process.

In our 4-week test, we rebuilt three workflows inside Coda: a product feature prioritization board, a content calendar with automated status updates, and a client project tracker that integrated with Slack and Jira. Coda AI powered column generation, formula creation, and document summaries. The standout was “Fill column with AI” — we fed it a list of 50 blog post topics, and it generated SEO-optimized titles and meta descriptions for each in one click.

The trade-off: Coda’s flexibility is its superpower and its weakness. The doc-as-app paradigm takes real time to learn. Team members used to Word or Google Docs may bounce off the learning curve. But once you’re in, Coda is more powerful than any other document tool on the market.

Our rating: 8.2/10 — powerful and unique, but requires commitment to learn.

Features & Capabilities {#features}

AI Page Builder

Coda AI can generate an entire doc from a prompt. Describe what you need — “A product launch checklist with owner assignments, due dates, and status tracking” — and Coda generates a structured page with tables, sections, and placeholder content.

Our test: “Build me a hiring pipeline tracker with stages, candidate info columns, and scoring.”

  • Coda generated: 6-stage pipeline (Sourced → Screened → Interviewed → Offered → Hired → Rejected)
  • Columns: Name, Role, Source, Stage, Score (1-10), Owner, Notes, Date Added
  • Buttons: “Move to Next Stage” (with confirmation dialog)
  • Result: 90% usable out of the box. We tweaked column types and added a Slack integration

The AI page builder is excellent for templates and starting points. For complex workflows, expect to customize 10-20%.

Table AI Actions

This is the most powerful Coda AI feature. Right-click on any table column and:

  • Fill column with AI: Generate content for every row — product descriptions, SEO titles, email templates
  • Summarize column: Condense long text fields into short summaries
  • Categorize column: Auto-tag rows based on content
  • Extract from column: Pull specific data from unstructured text

Real-world test:

  • Input: 50 blog topics in one column
  • AI action: “Fill column with AI” → “Generate an SEO-optimized title under 60 characters for each topic”
  • Result: 50 titles generated in ~45 seconds. 47 were usable, 3 had awkward phrasing
  • Time saved: ~2 hours of manual title generation

Limitations:

  • AI context is limited to the row and prompt — doesn’t reference other rows
  • Generated content follows patterns, so 50 generated items may feel formulaic
  • No batch editing — you can’t review all 50 items and change the prompt for specific rows

AI Formulas

Coda’s formula language is powerful but has a learning curve. The AI formula writer lets you describe what you want in English and converts it to a working Coda formula.

Example conversions from our tests:

  • “Turn this row red if the due date is past and the status isn’t Complete” → If([Due Date] < Today() And [Status] != "Complete", Color("red"))
  • “Calculate the average score across all review columns” → ThisTable.Select(Review1, Review2, Review3).Average()
  • “Count how many tasks are assigned to me that are overdue” → [Assigned To].Contains(Me()) And [Due Date] < Today()

Accuracy: ~85% on first attempt. The remaining 15% needed tweaking — usually because the AI misunderstood table relationships or custom column types.

AI Doc Q&A

A sidebar chat that answers questions about your document’s content. Unlike Google Docs’ sidebar AI or Notion AI Q&A, Coda’s version is document-aware — it can reference specific table rows, formulas, and page structure.

Test results:

  • “What projects are overdue?” → Correctly identified 3 tasks past due date with owner names
  • “Show me all tasks assigned to Sarah with high priority” → Correctly filtered the table and displayed results
  • “What’s the average sprint velocity over the last 4 sprints?” → Correctly calculated from sprint data across multiple rows

Limitation: Q&A only works on the current doc, not across your workspace. Cross-doc search requires Coda’s regular search.

Pack Integrations

Coda’s 200+ Pack integrations (spread across free and premium tiers) connect to:

  • Communication: Slack, Teams, Discord
  • Project management: Jira, Asana, Linear, Monday.com
  • Design: Figma, Canva
  • Engineering: GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket
  • Business: Salesforce, HubSpot, Stripe, QuickBooks
  • Social: Twitter, LinkedIn

Packs can bring data into Coda tables, send data out to external services, and trigger automations. The Slack Pack is particularly well-integrated — you can turn Slack messages into Coda rows, send table updates to Slack channels, and create approval workflows.

Pricing 2026 {#pricing}

PlanPriceKey FeaturesAI Limits
Free$0Unlimited docs, 50 objects, 1GB storage50 AI actions/month
Pro$10/mo (or $8/mo annual)Unlimited objects, 5GB storage, version history500 AI actions/month
Team$30/mo per editor30GB storage, Packs, automations, shared workspaces1,500 AI actions/month per editor
EnterpriseCustomUnlimited storage, SSO, advanced admin, audit logCustom AI limits

AI action costing: Each AI action (column fill, Q&A query, page generation, formula writing) counts toward your monthly limit. Heavy users on Pro may hit the 500-action cap.

Value analysis:

  • Free tier’s 50 AI actions/month is enough for light use (try before you buy)
  • Pro is the sweet spot for individuals and freelancers
  • Team plan’s per-editor pricing is expensive compared to Notion ($18/mo for Team plan with AI)
  • Enterprise pricing is opaque but includes custom AI limits

Pros & Cons {#pros-cons}

Pros 👍

AI is embedded, not bolted on. Unlike competitors where AI is a sidebar widget, Coda’s AI works inside tables, formulas, and page structures. This makes it genuinely useful for repetitive data tasks.

Doc-as-app paradigm is powerful. A Coda doc can start as meeting notes and grow into a project tracker with automation, dashboards, and integrations. This flexibility reduces the number of tools a team needs.

Fill Column with AI is a genuine time saver. Content generation at scale — product descriptions, SEO titles, email templates — becomes a one-click action instead of hours of manual work.

Formula writing democratizes automation. Non-technical team members can create automations by describing them in English. This lowers the barrier for process improvement.

Packs ecosystem is extensive. 200+ integrations with major business tools means Coda can become a central hub for operational data.

Cons 👎

Learning curve is real. Coda’s flexibility means there are many ways to do everything. New users often create documents that are harder to maintain because they didn’t know better patterns. Expect 2-4 weeks to get proficient.

AI slowdown on large documents. Documents with 50+ pages and complex table relationships see noticeable AI latency. The AI has to process the entire doc context, which is slow.

Mobile experience is weak. AI features are desktop-only. Document navigation on phone is read-centric. Not a tool for on-the-go work.

Pricing scales poorly. Per-editor pricing on Team plan means a 10-person team pays $300/month. Notion’s Team plan is $18/mo per member with AI included.

Formula automation fragility. Complex automations occasionally break when the underlying doc structure changes (column rename, table restructuring). No automated test capability for automations.

Alternatives {#alternatives}

  • Notion AI: The closest competitor. Q&A, writing assistant, AI within databases. $18/mo Team plan is cheaper. Better for note-taking; less powerful for structured data workflows. More intuitive for new users.
  • Google Docs + Gemini: AI writing assistance integrated into Google’s ecosystem. Free with Google Workspace ($12/mo). Best for traditional document workflows. No table automation or doc-as-app capabilities.
  • Airtable AI: Database-first approach with AI features for data enrichment, categorization, and formula writing. $20/mo Team plan. Better for pure database workflows; less flexible for narrative docs.
  • ClickUp AI: Project management with embedded AI. Task generation, workflow automation, document AI. $7/mo per member (Unlimited). Better for project management teams; less flexible for general document creation.

FAQ {#faq}

How is Coda AI different from Notion AI?

Coda AI is more deeply integrated into the document structure — it can fill table columns, write formulas, and build automations based on your doc’s structure. Notion AI is primarily a writing assistant and Q&A tool. Coda is better for structured data workflows; Notion is better for general note-taking and knowledge management.

How many AI actions do I get per month?

Free: 50 actions. Pro: 500 actions. Team: 1,500 actions per editor. An “action” includes: AI page generation, fill column, AI formula writing, AI doc Q&A query. Moderate daily use on Pro (2-3 actions/day) stays comfortably under the limit.

Can Coda AI access my documents for training?

Coda states that AI responses are based on your document content in real-time and that document data is not used to train AI models. Enterprise plan adds data processing agreements for additional assurances.

Does Coda work offline?

Limited offline support. Coda caches recently viewed documents for offline reading but offline editing is not supported. AI features require a network connection. This is a notable gap vs. Google Docs (full offline support) or Notion (limited offline).

Can I use Coda AI in mobile apps?

AI features are available on mobile but significantly reduced. You can use AI Doc Q&A on mobile, but table AI actions and page builder are desktop-only. Coda’s mobile app is primarily for reading and light editing.

What Packs does Coda AI support?

200+ integrations including Slack, Jira, GitHub, Salesforce, Figma, Stripe, HubSpot, Google Calendar, Outlook, and more. Premium Packs require the Team plan or higher. Free and Pro plans get standard Packs.
