If you’ve used AI coding agents for more than a few hours, you’ve hit the problem: the agent doesn’t know your project’s conventions. It imports from the wrong path, uses the wrong component pattern, or ignores your architectural rules. You end up repeating yourself in every prompt.
AIGX (AI Genome Exchange) is an open-source context format designed to solve this. Instead of scattering instructions in CLAUDE.md, .cursorrules, and copilot-instructions.md files, AIGX centralizes everything in a .aigx/ directory with a per-file boundary index. The result? AI agents that behave like senior engineers who already know your code.
What makes AIGX stand out from other context formats is that it’s the only one validated in a controlled benchmark — published with transparent methodology at n=60, where AIGX was the most consistent format across both weak and strong models.
What Is AIGX?
AIGX (pronounced “ay-gx”) stores a codebase’s AI-agent rules in a standardized .aigx/ directory. The format has five components:

The interactive wizard scaffolds a .aigx/ directory and wires it up to your AI agent of choice — Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot, Windsurf, Aider, or AGENTS.md-based tools. It also optionally sets up CI validation.
Setup time: ~5 minutes for a basic genome, ~15 minutes for a well-audited one.
How files.aigx Works
The per-file boundary index is the heart of AIGX. Here’s a minimal example:

Hands-On Testing
I set up AIGX on the ai-tools-review-hub project (Astro + TypeScript + MDX) and evaluated the experience.
Scaffold Experience
npm create aigx generated the full directory structure with sensible defaults. The wizard asked which AI tools I used (I selected Cursor + Claude Code), detected the project type, and pre-populated some rules from package.json and tsconfig.json detection.
Authoring files.aigx
This was the most time-consuming part — and necessarily so. I needed to:
- Identify the distinct zones in the codebase (content collections, components, pages, layouts, utilities)
- Define which architectural rules apply to each zone
- Note forbidden patterns in each zone
For a 15K LOC project with ~300 files, I defined 7 zones with about 3-5 rules each. The process took about 20 minutes — more for the thinking than the writing.
Validation
aigx lint caught a few issues: a glob pattern that didn’t match any files, a referenced ARCH rule that didn’t exist, and a file that matched two overlapping zones. These were easy to fix.
Agent Behavior Change
I tested Claude Code before and after AIGX setup with the same prompt: “Add a new review page for the Moonshine AI tool.”
Before AIGX:

The difference was subtle but meaningful. The agent didn’t magically write better code — but it didn’t make the common mistakes, and it didn’t need correction on the basics.
The Benchmark
What sets AIGX apart from every other context format is the published benchmark. The author ran a controlled experiment (n=60) comparing AIGX against plain CLAUDE.md, .cursorrules, and AGENTS.md files across two models (Claude Haiku 4.5 and Sonnet 4.6):

The author is transparent that at n=60, the top formats are a statistical tie on composite mean — AIGX’s edge is consistency across models and robustness against adversarial prompts (it survived all 24 deliberate “attack” prompts).
This honesty in the benchmark reporting is refreshing. The point isn’t that AIGX is magically better — it’s that it’s measurably good, consistently across models, and it doesn’t break under stress.

Limitations
AIGX has real trade-offs:
- It costs time to set up properly: A good .aigx/ directory requires thinking about your architecture and conventions. For small projects (<5K LOC), the return on investment is marginal.
- files.aigx can become complex: In a large monorepo with many conventions, the boundary index grows. The format handles this with glob patterns, but it’s still work to maintain.
- It’s not magic: As the benchmark honestly notes, the improvement is real but not transformative. AIGX helps agents make fewer basic mistakes — it doesn’t make them 2× more productive.
- Young ecosystem: As of July 2026, AIGX has been public since June 20. The community is small, examples are sparse, and best practices are still emerging.
- No IDE editing support: Editing .aigx files means opening a text editor. No VS Code extension or web UI exists yet.
Who Should Use AIGX
AIGX makes the most sense for:
- Team projects with established conventions: If your team has coding standards that new agents should follow, AIGX encodes them once in a tool-agnostic format.
- CI/CD pipelines:
aigx lintruns in CI, catching drift between your conventions and what agents are told. - Multi-agent workflows: If you switch between Claude Code, Cursor, and Copilot, AIGX gives you one rule set for all of them.
- Developers who value proven approaches: The benchmark isn’t perfect, but it’s more evidence than any other context format provides.
Verdict
AIGX is the most thoughtful approach to AI coding agent context I’ve seen. The per-file boundary index is a genuinely useful innovation that addresses a real problem: agents loading irrelevant rules and making avoidable mistakes. The benchmark — transparently reported with its limitations acknowledged — gives it credibility that no other context format can claim.
It’s not for every project. Small repos and solo developers may not get enough ROI from the setup time. But for teams, monorepos, and anyone who’s tired of correcting their AI agent on the same conventions repeatedly, AIGX is worth the investment.
The honest benchmark, tool-agnostic design, and three-language reference implementations show a maturity that’s rare for a project only a few weeks old. AIGX is one to watch — and for the right project, one to use today.
